Overview

On the sunny beaches of San Diego, three friends had a big dream: to transform the traditional beach towel and give back to the environment. Sand Cloud was born.

Sand Cloud exemplifies its commitment to marine conservation by donating 10% of all profits towards their nonprofit partners on the frontlines of marine conservation. When customers choose to purchase a beach towel from Sand Cloud, they not only receive a premium, sand-resistant, and ultra-absorbent Turkish cotton towel but also actively contribute to the brand's mission to #savethefishies.

Challenge

Sand Cloud faced a challenge when it came to offering customers personalized upsell options. With a wide range of product lines, they realized the need to provide relevant upsells instead of a one-size-fits-all approach. Steven Ford, the cofounder of Sand Cloud explains this concern:

"We wanted customization and greater control around what we could offer customers as an upsell. We have a wide range of product lines, so we felt we needed to offer relevant upsells rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. We've tried a custom cart upsell that offered a few different upsell options as well as a 'You may also be interested in' option on product pages but the first option didn't allow us to offer the most relevant products to customers based on what was in their cart. The second option, meanwhile, didn't allow us to test different price points for the products or stages in the customer journey for the offer.”

Solution

Sand Cloud wanted a solution that could offer enhanced personalization. Sand Cloud’s post-purchase offers strategy was two-fold:

  • Personalization for specific product categories
  • Mystery products

Highly personalized post-purchase offers can be extremely effective — especially when you know which products pair well together. For example when someone buys a beach towel, show SPF as your post-purchase offer. This is a core part of the strategy that Sand Cloud employed in their post-purchase upsells. Using AfterSell’s triggering engine, they segmented customers based on the product or collection they’re purchasing from and recommended products that are complementary.

For example, customers purchasing from Sand Cloud’s Marine Life Towels Collection were shown the best-selling Whale Shark towel if it wasn't already in their cart as an offer. Shortly after, Sand Cloud also used AfterSell’s A/B testing to find a winning offer. In the same example, they A/B tested the Whale Shark towel with their Boho Turquoise towel and found that it generated 10% more revenue per visit!
